Bible Study : 2 John


2 John


This letter was written by John, one of Jesus Christ’s twelve disciples. He wrote to an elect lady and her children giving greetings (vs 1-3) and making some specific points (vs 5, 10 & 12). He shows the practical aspect of love towards the Christian brethren (vs 4-6) and warns people to take care over supporting travelling teachers because of the danger of false teaching (vs 7-11).

Questions

Q.1   What does John particularly write about to this unnamed person?
         (See vs 5, 10 & 12).
Q.2   What are the main themes in this letter? There are at least four key
         words repeated three times or more that John is stressing in this letter.
Q.3   What is meant by an antichrist? (v 7)
Q.4   What false teaching do you think John is exposing in this letter (vs 7-9)
Q.5   What do we understand of who God is in this letter? (See vs 3, 7 & 9)
Q.6   Discuss what our attitude should be to dealing with false teachers.

Q.7   Who is “the elect lady and her children”? (v 1)
Q.8   What evidence do we see from this letter that John really cares for other
         believers?
Q.9   How is John greeting the unnamed person? Look carefully at verse 3. It
         is helpful to look up the meaning of the words that John uses in his
         greetings.
Q.10 Does this short letter show us how to grow spiritually? (See vs 5, 6 & 9)
Q.11 Does John show that some Christians were departing from God?

Q.12 Why did John keep his letter short when he could have written much more?
